Best Hiking Socks

I’m going to be honest with you - I only wear socks because it is a force of habit. I can pretty much live without wearing them. I love being barefoot. But in search of the best hiking socks, I learned a few things.

Did you know that the bottom of each foot has 125,000 sweat glands? Crazy, right? It is no wonder why wearing socks is extremely important. I always thought my feet naturally don’t stink - it turns out the socks keep it from reeking. By going barefoot in our shoes, we invite germs, blisters, and even possible blood and sweat stains into the soles. This typically results in a nasty smell that never leaves. Defaulting on the socks can cause various foot problems. Thank you, mother, for never letting me wear shoes without socks!

As you know, hiking is a strenuous activity, heavily relying on our feet. Next to our footwear, socks are our next layer of protection. So I would like to share with you some of the best hiking socks I have tried:

2 Things to Consider in Choosing the Best Hiking Socks

I only considered two things when I decided the best hiking socks for me:

1. My Feet

Of course, you have to consider where your feet will feel most comfortable in. Some people like thick socks, while I prefer thin ones. Some want it no-show, some want it knee-high. You know what they say, happy feet, happy hike.

2. The Weather

You have to anticipate the kind of weather you will encounter during your hike. You don’t want to wear thin socks in an algid weather.

On My Next Hike, I Will Wear…

...the Darn Tough Vermont Men's 1/4 Merino Wool Cushion Hiking Socks.

darn tough vermont men's

For a person who dislikes thick, bulky socks., these are the right one for me. My feet easily feel hot and cramped when wearing shoes and socks (That’s why I prefer wearing sandals on an ordinary day), but when I wore these socks with a heavy-duty hiking boot, it felt like I was just wearing an ordinary pair of sneakers. I wore it effortlessly. I also like that my feet were dry as dust when I removed my shoes and socks even after hours and hours of walking in them.
